Premiere: London Singer-Songwriter Abimaro Ponders Mortality And Loss On Soulful “Buried”

Written by on July 19, 2019

London-based singer-songwriter Abimaro has just announced the impending release of her debut album. We’ve yet to have any concrete word on the title or release date, but what we do have is the first single from the collection, “Buried”, which is also the first of three singles to be released this summer.

The “Buried”, directed by Anand Singh and Abimaro herself, sees her standing in a grand church, singing a profoundly soulful a capella performance over nothing but a subdued backing vocal. In the sobering, stripped-back performance, Abimaro comes to terms with the loss of a loved one, unpacking the concept of mortality and how it impacts her outlook on life.

Speaking with Complex via email, Abimaro told us: “I wanted to create something that felt different from anything I’m listening to, and to give my voice the space to breathe. It feels honest and stripped of anything unnecessary. For me ‘Buried’ is about going back to basics, to life and death and breath and voice.”
