Premiere: Vesce Return With Haunting, Gospel-Tinged R&B Cut “Broken”

Written by on October 17, 2019

It’s been two years since the release of their boundary-defying debut EP Self-Edit, but now South London duo Vesce (pronounced: Ves) are back with a follow-up single: “Broken”.

Driven by an almost dirge-like beat, the understated new single puts the pained, haunting vocals front and centre above the minimal production. While Self-Edit featured an element of gospel and soul stirred into their minimalist R&B, “Broken” takes that even further, employing a haunting vocal line and ghostly harmonies to give the track a near spiritual edge as they mine their own lives — for better or worse — for inspiration.

Speaking with Complex via email, they told us: “The inspiration of the creation of the EP was life. We created a body of work that reflected where we were at the time of creation in our personal lives and space in regards to our feelings within our selves, others around us and the relationships. The themes around the songs are based on identity, pain, love and seeing the perspectives in and around us.”

“Broken” is taken from Vesce’s upcoming R/D EP, which drops later this year.
