Prince Estate Releases Rare Fan Favorite “Don’t Let Him Fool Ya”

Written by on November 8, 2019

The previously rare fan favorite “Don’t Let Him Fool Ya,” recorded back in 1982, has now been officially released by Prince‘s estate.

The track, which sees the late Prince playing every single instrument during sessions with recording engineer Don Batts at a home studio on Kiowa Trail in Minnesota, will appear on the upcoming Super Deluxe Edition of the Purple One‘s 1982 album 1999.

“I like to go with my intuition,” Prince once said of his in-studio process, as pointed out in a press release announcing Friday’s “Don’t Let Him Fool Ya” drop. “Something hits me and I need to get the track down before I can move on. It’s like there’s another person inside me, talking to me.”

The expanded 1999, out Nov. 29, includes a total of 23 previously unissued studio tracks pulled from Prince’s recording sessions spanning November 1981 and January 1983. Additionally, the release features audio of a live performance from the 1999 Tour in Detroit dated Nov. 30, 1982. Fans can also look forward to a DVD of a Houston Summit-set performance from the same era.

Last month, the estate released an acoustic demo of the Grammy-winning “I Feel for You,” a raw solo take on the track stemming from 1978/1979-era sessions unearthed in the singer’s personal vault.

That same month, a widely covered memoir excerpt revealed Prince’s non-fandom of the musical stylings of Ed Sheeran and Katy Perry.
