‘Ralph Breaks The Internet’ Beats Thanksgiving Slump, Tops Box Office Again

Written by on December 2, 2018

For the first time since 2012, the weeks following the Thanksgiving holiday have been fruitful for the movie industry with Disney’s Ralph Breaks The Internet topping this week’s box office.

Historically, statistics have proven that ticket buyers go into a turkey-induced coma in the weeks between Thanksgiving and Christmas as Americans are preoccupied with holiday preparations. But this year proved to be more profitable than those of the past as the box office posted its best numbers since 2012 grossing close to $10 million. The upswing can be credited to this year’s focus on family-oriented films and sitting atop of this mountain of profit, for the second week in a row, is Disney’s hit animated movie, Ralph Breaks The Internet.

According to Indiewire, the sequel to the 2012 film Wreck-It Ralph has racked in close to $119 million in the 12 days since its release. This puts the movie’s totals slightly ahead of last year’s marquee, Oscar-winning animation, Coco. This is good news for Disney Studios. Ralph Breaks The Internet‘s success means it will sustain through the inevitable decline that becomes happens the closer it gets to Christmas, meaning Disney recuperate the movie’s high production cost as a $200 million total is certain.

Adding to Ralph Breaks The Internet‘s impressive number is the fact that unlike years in the past, the movie had direct competition from films in its genre. The movie stole younger audiences away from Universal’s The Grinch and the highly promoted Creed II. This speaks to the movie’s intangibles that will afford the film to have an even more bountiful post-theater afterlife.
