Some people thought that Roddy Ricch forgot the lyrics to “The Box” while he was performing the hit track during a surprise performance at Stoner Ape Club NFT group’s showcase in Los Angeles on Saturday night.
On Sunday, a TikTok video went viral in which Roddy seemed to have forgotten the words of his first verse, which starts with him rapping, “I was out back where the stash at/Cruise the city in a bulletproof Cadillac/’Cause I know these n***as after where the bag at/Gotta move smarter, gotta move harder.”
The clip sees Roddy turn his back and gesture to someone offstage while pointing at his earpiece, perhaps to signal that he was having trouble hearing the beat.
According to TMZ, a rep for Roddy confirmed that the rapper was dealing with “major” audio issues during his performance.
“His earpiece wasn’t connecting with the track, leaving him to take his cues from the sound blaring from the speakers,” the outlet wrote.
Released in December 2019 as the fourth single from his debut album Please Excuse Me for Being Antisocial, “The Box” spent 11 weeks at No. 1 on Billboard’s Hot 100. It would go on to earn three nominations at the 63rd Annual Grammy Awards for Song of the Year, Best Rap Song, and Best Melodic Rap Performance, and last year was certified Diamond by the RIAA.
