Ruth Bader Ginsburg Underwent Surgery for Lung Cancer

Written by on December 21, 2018

Back in November, U.S. Supreme Court judge Ruth Bader Ginsburg broke three ribs, which led to the discovery of two cancerous nodules on her lung. According to a statement released on Friday by the Supreme Court, Bader underwent a pulmonary lobectomy today at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York City, removing the two cancerous growths.

The two nodules were discovered in the lower lobe of her left lung, and if it wasn’t for her incident in November, doctors might not have discovered the growths. “Post-surgery, there was no evidence of any remaining disease,” the Supreme Court’s Kathleen L. Arberg wrote. “Scans performed before surgery indicated no evidence of disease elsewhere in the body. Currently, no further treatment is planned. Justice Ginsburg is resting comfortably and is expected to remain in the hospital for a few days. Updates will be provided as they become available.”

As Refinery29 points out, Ginsburg is a survivor of both pancreatic and colon cancer. The resilient Ginsburg, who’s starting to feel invincible at this point, hopes to go back to work in the new year. The judge, who is sometimes known as the “Notorious RBG,” has been on the Supreme Court for 25 years, after being appointed in 1993.
