Sebastian Telfair Convicted of Felony Criminal Possession of a Weapon

Written by on April 25, 2019

Former NBA player Sebastian Telfair was found guilty of felony criminal possession of a weapon on Wednesday by a jury in New York City, TMZ reports

Telfair is due back in court in June for sentencing. He faces up to 15 years in prison.

Telfair was arrested in June 2017 in Brooklyn, and charged with gun possession-related charges and possession of a controlled substance after authorities recovered three loaded firearms, one semi-automatic rifle, a bulletproof vest and two bags of marijuana during a traffic stop.

Telfair pled not guilty, but nearly two years later, a jury didn’t rule in his favor.

Telfair’s weapons charge is the latest moment in what has been his fall from grace since his time as a highly touted prospect out of Abraham Lincoln High School. Following his senior year, the Coney Island native was presented with the decision of playing collegiate ball in Louisville or jumping right into the league. He chose the latter.

After he was selected 13th overall in the 2004 draft by the Portland Trail Blazers, Telfair could never get his NBA career off the ground, joining eight teams during his near decade run in the league. In 2007, Telfair was arrested and charged with felony possession of a weapon. He pleaded guilty and received three years probation.
