Shia LaBeouf and Robert De Niro Will Star in Upcoming Drama ‘After Exile’

Written by on August 12, 2019

According to an exclusive from Deadline, both Shia LaBeouf and Robert De Niro have committed to star in the crime redemption drama After Exile.

For those who can’t tell much about a movie from a two-word title (i.e. everybody) the movie will be about Mike Delany (played by LaBeouf), a recently released prisoner who had previously been incarcerated for killing an innocent man during the course of a violent robbery. Following his release, Delaney joins his ex-criminal father, Ted Delaney (played by De Niro), in an effort to steer his younger brother away from a life of crime/drugs. Deadline adds that the drama is “about the difficult trajectory toward forgiveness and redemption,” and also says that De Niro’s character became a widower years earlier, and now is a guilt-stricken alcoholic whose only purpose in life is to divert his sons from following his same destructive life path.

The film is set to be directed by Joshua Michael Stern (who previously directed the Steve Jobs biopic Jobs). And it will be written by Anthony Thorne and Michael Tovo…with Tovo reportedly basing the story on true events from his own life.

Filming is set to start in Philadelphia in October.

In the meantime, you can catch LaBeouf in the arthouse film The Peanut Butter Falcon, and (later this fall) in the self-autobiographical Sundance film Honey Boy. As for De Niro, you can see him in the Martin Scorsese-directed Netflix film The Irishman, or if you prefer big screens you can see him in the upcoming Joaquin Phoenix-starring Joker film when it comes out on October 4.
