Skepta-Approved Dré Six Imagines What Could Have Been In “Another Life” Vid

Written by on January 18, 2023

Here to offer something a little different, rising star Dré Six has just dropped off his new single, “Another Life”. Offering self-conscious stories of block life delivered in a stripped-back sound without hubris, he recently caught the attention of Skepta, who’s been sharing the track on his socials.

Dré’s been steadily putting out music since at least 2020, toying with different sounds and ideas, but in the past 12 months he’s really hit his stride. His earliest drops were packed with trappy bass lines and bravado, even his singing was more upbeat, but early last year he swapped the 808s for an acoustic guitar and a more tender vocal style. Almost immediately, it seems, things have fallen into place (see: his recent COLORS Studio session).

Although this new sound—or refined version of his sound, I should say—has got much more mainstream potential, he hasn’t really compromised on the lyrical content. If anything, he’s leaned more into those stories. In this case, that means a wistful, and at times tragic, exercise in imagining the kind of life he might have had certain circumstances been different—and it’s got a hauntingly catchy hook to keep it lodged in your mind for the foreseeable future.

That stripped-back approach is reflected in the visuals—co-directed by Naz and WhatsESaying—where we follow Dré and his pals around his local spots, all rendered in stark black-and-white. Taking us from the tower block to the high street, he reflects on all the different factors that lead him to where he is today.

Hit play on the new video up top and then be sure to add “Another Life” to all your playlists.
