‘Sonic the Hedgehog’ Edges Out ‘The Call of the Wild’ to Become No. 1 Movie in the Country

Written by on February 23, 2020

Sonic the Hedgehog was able to win its tug-of-war with Disney’s The Call of the Wild to become the no. 1 movie in the country.

Per Deadline, Sonic pulled in $26.7 million this weekend. These numbers give the movie a total of $107 million since it opened in theaters ten days ago. Sonic’s successful weekend pushed the film past The Call of the Wild as the film adaptation of Jack London novel earned $24.8 million this weekend.

Although they’re both PG-rated films, critics believe that Sonic edged out The Call of the Wild because it was a more family-oriented movie. According to PostTrak exits, over 80% of the people that went to see The Call of the Wild were over 25 years old, while Sonic continues to be a four-star film for general audiences, parents, and children under 12.

As Sonic the Hedgehog and The Call of the Wild jockeyed for the top spot, Warner Bros.’ Birds of Prey continued to sputter at the box office. The Harley Quinn film grossed just $6.8 million this weekend, bringing the film’s total earnings to $72.3 million. But its outing was still better than the opening Brahms: The Boy II put together this weekend. The thriller came in fifth behind Sony’s Bad Boys for Life, grossing just around $5.8 million for its debut weekend.
