Sony Files Patent for PS5 Controllers That Could Measure Your ‘Biofeedback’

According to reports, Sony has filed a patent for an accessory that players would attach to a Playstation 5 controller for the purpose of acquiring feedback for your one’s physical measurements. These measurements could include things like heart rate and sweat, with the purpose of tailoring gameplay around them.
IGN reports that a patent application was filed earlier this month by Sony Interactive Entertainment Europe for just such a peripheral device. That patent was for “a biofeedback sensor attachment for a controller,” which would be made up of “one or more sensors for obtaining biofeedback information arranged such that at least one sensor is in contact with a user’s hand during normal use of the controller.” In simpler terms, there would be a sensor on the back of your Dualshock, and those sensors would use your sweat glands to note emotional responses you’re having to gameplay.
The patent’s description goes on to state that the reason behind the add-on is to keep up with the ever-evolving arms race that is the gaming industry.
“There is a desire in computer gaming to provide an immersive and highly interactive experience for players, so as to enhance the enjoyment of the player,” Sony says within the description. “This has become of particular interest with the increasing availability of head-mountable displays (HMDs), which are provided with the intention of fully immersing a player in the in-game environment.”
Note that head-mountable displays reference in that quote is likely a nod to VR headsets.
The patent application also argues that there’s a “need to provide a low-cost peripheral” that is able to “provide increased functionality for a range of different applications.”
Playstation 5 has been confirmed for a release date prior to Holiday 2020, with it expected to hit stores and online warehouses sometime between October and December. That’s really not that far away, so some more information should be arriving soon.
