Spider-Man will remain in the Marvel Cinematic Universe—that is, if Amy Pascal gets her way.

During a recent interview with Vanity Fair, the film producer said she hopes Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios will extend their Spider-Man partnership. The initial deal took place in 2015, when Sony—which owns the theatrical rights to the Spider-Man universe—allowed the web-slinger to join his fellow Avengers in the MCU. Though the agreement is expected to expire in a couple of years, many fans are already wondering what will happen to the Spider-Man franchise. Some believe Sony will decide to keep Peter Parker to themselves, as the studio stuck box office gold with Venom; however, Pascal insists she doesn’t want that to happen.

“I think about crying,” the Sony producer, when asked about the Sony-Marvel contract ending. “I can only hope for a future where things work out. I’ve known Kevin [Feige, Marvel Studios producer] since he was [Avi Arad’s] very, very quiet assistant, who for many years sat in that room listening to us and being so much smarter than any of us without any of us realizing. I will say that working with Marvel has been one of the highlights of my professional career.”

Of course, the decision to extend the deal isn’t completely in Pascal’s hands. But considering she’s one of Sony’s top producers, there’s no doubt that her opinion will impact the outcome. Pascal has been involved with three installments of the Spider-Man franchise: 2017’s Spider-Man: Homecoming, the newly released Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, and Spider-Man: Far From Home, which will hit theaters July 5, 2019.
