The latest Spider-Man movie had a promising opening in international markets ahead of its premiere in the United States. Variety reports that the first post-Endgame Marvel movie netted $111 million over the weekend in Japan, China and Hong Kong. China accounted for $98 million, while Japan turned out to the tune of $9.4 million. Hong Kong accounted for the remaining $3.8 million.
The film that our own Frazier Tharpe called “truly and thoroughly everything you’d want from a Spider-Man movie” follows Tom Holland’s Peter Parker as he tries to be Spidey and visit Europe on a school trip while the Avengers pick themselves up after the events of Endgame. It’s expected to have a huge opening next week, when it hits just about every other market.

Back in the US, Toy Story 4 is dominant. The film pulled in $80 million over the weekend, more than enough to beat its next closest competitor Annabelle Comes Home. Far From Home will almost definitely knock Pixar off its perch, though both properties are owned by Disney. That success will be more than earned, if early reviews are to be believed.
“Far From Home perfectly showcases how Marvel’s mastered the ability to tell self-contained stories that also answer questions about the larger MCU; not all Marvel flicks can pull that off, certainly not as magically as Far From Home has,” khal said in his review. “That’s why it’s top tier in my book: they’re building a franchise that mirrors the major players in the MCU in importance.”
