It’s confirmed: Miles Morales will return to the big screen in 2022.
On Friday evening, Sony Pictures announced the release date of the sequel to 2018’s Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. The animated film was both a critical and commercial triumph—setting box office records, grossing $375.5 million worldwide, and winning Best Animated Feature at the 91st Academy Awards. There was also its star-studded soundtrack.
Directed by Bob Persichetti, Peter Ramsey, and Rodney Rothman, Spider-Verse tells the story of Brooklyn teenager Miles who acquires spidey powers following Peter Parker’s death. He then teams up with a group of other web-slingers to defeat supervillain Kingpin. Spider-Verse featured the voices of Shameik Moore, Hailee Steinfeld, Mahershala Ali, Liev Schreiber, Brian Tyree Henry, and Lily Tomlin.
Sony has not shared any other details about the Spider-Verse sequel. Producers Phil Lord and Christopher Miller are expected to return for the next installment.
Spider-Verse will hit theaters April 8, 2022. Stay tuned as more information about the film becomes available.
Sony is also reportedly developing an all-female Spider-Verse spinoff that will focus on the character of Gwen Stacy, a.k.a. Spider-Gwen. In a 2018 interview with Vanity Fair, producer Amy Pascal confirmed the spinoff would also feature Cindy Moon, a.k.a. Silk, and as well as Jessica Drew, a.k.a. Spider-Woman.
“I think it’s great that we’re going to be able to tell movies about female superheroes in this realm, and in the live-action realm as well, because I believe that there are going to be characters that really resonate for people,” Pascal said. “They’re funny and quirky and different, and heroic in all kinds of different ways that only animation allows you to do.”
