Spike Lee expertly channeled the swelling emotions of millions Sunday night when, per firsthand accounts, he straight up attempted to walk out of the Oscars after Green Book was announced as this year’s Best Picture winner.

According to Deadline, Lee was “clearly” furious when he “got up and walked toward the back of the auditorium in a huff.” At one point, Lee is said to have engaged in “an intense conversation” with 2018 Best Original Screenplay winner Jordan Peele. After reportedly pacing the aisle near the back of the Dolby Theatre, Lee returned but kept his back to the stage during Green Book producers’ acceptance comments.

While backstage taking questions about his Best Adapted Screenplay win, Lee added some words to his understandable displeasure. “This is my sixth glass, and you know why,” he told reporters ahead of receiving his first question. When asked about his Best Picture reaction, Lee pointed to his prior history of Oscar snubs, specifically the year Driving Miss Daisy scored a win in a category that overlooked Lee’s classic Do the Right Thing.

“I’m snake bit,” he said. “I mean, every time somebody is driving somebody, I lose. But they changed the seating arrangement!”

Later, Lee joked that his reaction was simply a result of him temporarily thinking he was courtside at the Garden. “The ref made a bad call,” he said.

Unfortunately, Monday morning then brought some predictably petulant comments about Lee from the guy who once tried to peddle steaks at the Sharper Image. Tweeting in response to Lee’s truths-filled Oscar acceptance speech, this particular guy actually tried to characterize Lee’s words of inspiration as some sort of “racist” attack on him.
