Spike Lee’s ‘She’s Gotta Have It’ Canceled by Netflix After 2 Seasons

Written by on July 18, 2019

Spike Lee‘s She’s Gotta Have It has been canceled by Netflix, Variety reports. The show, which is based on Lee’s 1986 movie of the same name, ran for two seasons.

The show’s second season premiered on the streaming service back on May 24, 2019. The show starred DeWanda Wise as Nola Darling, Anthony Ramos as Mars Blackmon, Lyriq Bent as Jamie Overstreet, Cleo Anthony as Greer Childs, Margot Bingham as Clorinda “Clo” Bradford, Chyna Layne as Shemekka Epps, and De’Adre Aziza as Raqueletta Moss.

Spike Lee is one of the greatest filmmakers of all time and we’re thrilled he brought the series She’s Gotta Have It (1986, based on his first feature film) to Netflix,” Ted Sarandos, chief content officer at Netflix, said, per Variety. “While this is our last season, we’re very proud that it will be on our service for years to come, and excited to be working with Spike on his upcoming Netflix film Da 5 Bloods.”

Lee will reportedly shop the series around in hopes of finding it another home.

News of She’s Gotta Have It’s cancelation comes on the heels of reports that Netflix lost 130,000 subscribers in the U.S. during Q2. “Our missed forecast was across all regions, but slightly more so in regions with price increases,” Netflix said. The company pointed to their “content” as one of the reasons for the decline. “Rather, we think Q2’s content slate drove less growth in paid net adds than we anticipated.”
