‘SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run’ Gets a Trailer, Spinoff Possibly Coming to Netflix

The third SpongeBob SquarePants movie, Sponge on the Run, is finally around the corner. After landing a 2020 release date following its initial 2019 window, Paramount has given a longer look at the CGI-animated sequel to 2015’s Sponge Out of Water. As previously indicated, the film will serve as a prequel to the beloved TV series, following SpongeBob and Patrick as they attempt to recover Gary the Snail.
In keeping with the tradition of having a celebrity appear in live-action form in the SpongeBob movies, Keanu Reeves stops by for a cameo as a magic tumbleweed. Yes, it’s as wild as it sounds, and Keanu looks like he’s having a blast. Watch the trailer up top.
Sponge on the Run isn’t the only new SpongeBob on the way, however, as the New York Times reports that a “music-based project” centered around Squidward could be on the way to Netflix. The rumored spinoff would arrive as part of the multi-year deal between Nickelodeon and Netflix that was reportedly worth $200 million, which would see Nick produce both new shows and movies for Netflix.
“Nickelodeon’s next step forward is to keep expanding beyond linear platforms, and our broader content partnership with Netflix is a key path toward that goal,” Nickelodeon president Brian Robbins explained of the deal. He went on to add, “The ideas and work at our Studio are flowing, and we can’t wait to work with Melissa and the Netflix team on a premium slate of original animated content for kids and families around the world.”
Prior to the news of the deal, Netflix had worked with Nickelodeon on Rocko’s Modern Life: Static Cling and Invader Zim: Enter the Florpus.
