By way of advance ticket sales for another surefire megahit, Disney has topped themselves.
Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker sold an estimated 45 percent more tickets Monday night during its first hour of presales than Avengers: Endgame did during its first hour earlier this year, CNBC reported. Per Atom Tickets, this marks a new record.
The updated Atom Tickets rundown of the movies with the biggest first-hour sales now reads as follows:
- Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker
- Avengers: Endgame
- Avengers: Infinity War
- Star Wars: The Last Jedi
- Star Wars: Rogue One
Also on Monday night, we were gifted the final trailer for J.J. Abrams‘ saga-closing return to the Star Wars universe:
“This is about bringing this thing to a close in a way that is emotional and meaningful and also satisfying in terms of actually answering [as many] questions as possible,” Abrams, who previously directed The Force Awakens, told Entertainment Weekly of his Rise of Skywalker aim earlier this month. “So if years from now, someone’s watching these movies, all nine of them, they’re watching a story that is as cohesive as possible.”
Rise of Skywalker is clearly one of the most anticipated (if not the most anticipated) movies on the 2019 agenda and arguably stands a fighting chance at later topping Avengers: Endgame‘s historic box office run. That three-hour epic ultimately went on to earn $858 million domestically, with a worldwide total of $2.79 billion.
