‘Star Wars’ TV Series ‘The Mandalorian’ Casts Nick Nolte, Who Was Once Considered for Han Solo

Written by on December 2, 2018

Variety reports that Nick Nolte has been added to the cast of the upcoming Disney+ streaming service series The Mandalorian, joining Pedro Pascal and Gina Carano. Much like everything else associated with The Mandalorian, the details behind Nolte’s role is being kept under wraps.

Jon Favreau, who will executive produce, and write the script for the series, gave us our first peep behind the curtain with an Instagram post featuring an image stylized in a way that has been synonymous with the Star Wars opening crawl sequence.

“After the stories of Jango and Boba Fett, another warrior emerges in the Star Wars universe. ‘The Mandalorian’ is set after the fall of the Empire and before the emergence of the First Order,” the post reads. “We follow the travails of a lone gunfighter in the outer reaches of the galaxy far from the authority of the New Republic.”

Nolte’s attachment to the series comes well after he came close to joining another Star Wars franchise. The actor once revealed that he was placed on a short list in the running to play Han Solo. Spoiler alert: The role eventually went to Harrison Ford. He admits that, unless the franchise wanted a “goofy” Han, they were right to pass on him. “I think that was a given that [Han Solo] was going to go to Harrison Ford,” Nolte said, per MTV. “In that group of filmmakers, he was their actor. I’d have been kind of a goofy ‘Star Wars’ guy.”

The Mandalorian is expected to premiere next year.
