Steph Curry on Questioning the Moon Landing: ‘Obviously I Was Joking’

Steph Curry has managed to turn this whole moon landing fiasco into a teachable moment for his fans. On Wednesday, Curry admitted that he was “one thousand percent” joking when he questioned whether an American has ever landed on the moon on The Ringer podcast “Winging It” with Vince Carter, Andre Iguodala, and Kent Bazemore, adding that his remarks were all part of him conducting a silent protest.
“One thousand percent,” Curry told ESPN. “One thousand percent. Obviously I was joking when I was talking on the podcast. [Then] I was silently protesting how stupid it was that people actually took that quote and made it law as, ‘Oh my God, he’s a fake-moon-landing truther,’ whatever you want to call it, yada, yada, yada. So I was silently protesting that part about it, how the story took a life of its own.”
The teachable moment comes from Curry imploring his fans to seek out the power of informing themselves, instead of simply taking what their favorite athletes say at their word. This is why Steph will take up NASA on their offer to check out their lunar lab with the intention of better educating himself. “But in terms of the reaction that I’ve gotten, I am definitely going to take [NASA] up on their offer,” he said. “I am going to educate myself firsthand on everything that NASA has done and shine a light on their tremendous work over the years. And hopefully people understand that education is power, informing yourself is power. For kids out there that hang on every word that we say, which is important, understand that you should not believe something just because somebody says it. You should do your homework and understand what you actually believe. But I’m going to go to NASA and I’m going to enjoy the experience wholeheartedly.”
During his appearance on the “Winging It” podcast, Curry wondered about the moon landing being real when the group, which included Bazemore, Carter, and Iguodala, discussed the various conspiracy theories that get thrown around. “We ever been to the moon?,” Steph asked. After two players responded with a “no,” Curry continued, “They’re gonna come get us. I don’t think so, either.”
