D-Smoke has dropped his highly anticipated sophomore album War & Wonders.
The new project follows in the footsteps of Smoke’s critically acclaimed debut Black Habits, which snagged him two Grammy nominations last year for Best New Artist and Best Rap Album.
War & Wonders’ first single, a stripped-down, jazzy track called “Common Sense,” was released last week and features the voice of SiR, Smoke’s fellow Inglewood resident. “War & Wonders is about capturing the beauty and struggle of Inglewood living,” Smoke said of the new album in a press release. “The wars we fight, both internal and external, help us to embrace love, success, and life’s many wonders.”
D Smoke also spoke on the project’s cover art, which depicts Smoke having a noose placed around his neck as limp bodies pile at his feet. “I connected with AJWILLDESIGN when a friend shared his art piece ‘Stronger Together’ over Instagram,” Smoke said of the cover’s inspiration. “It depicted a group of slaves uplifting one of their own out of bondage. It was already a brilliant piece and I just requested a hood version for the album artwork. It represents unity, struggle, and liberation.”
The 16-track album comes after Smoke shared the visuals for “Shame On You,” which is also on the project. It features appearances from John Legend, Fireboy DML, BJ The Chicago Kid, WESTSIDE BOOGIE, Tobe Nwigwe, and Marsha Ambrosius.
