Givēon’s full-length debut album Give or Take is finally here.
Give or Take arrives less than a month after the “Lie Again” singer announced its imminent arrival on Instagram, along with the caption, “Thank you for being so patient with me.” Even though Givēon released two EPs, Take Time and When It’s All Said and Done, within an eight-month span, those projects came out about two years ago.
Along with dropping the album, the artist also shared the music video for the “Lost Me,” which you watch below.
In an interview with Zane Lowe on Apple Music 1, Givēon explained that he was looking to tell a story through Give or Take and wanted to ultimately create something that could stand the test of time. “When’s the last time we heard a story from the perspective of, I’ll say, a 25- to 27-year-old man really just telling his story,” he said. “Then on top of all of that, you add all this newfound attention. I can’t remember the last time I heard that. That’s the timelessness I aim for.”
That newfound attention includes a Grammy nomination last year for Best R&B Album for Take Time, as well as a Song and Record of the Year nod for his work on Justin Bieber’s “Peaches,” which he’s featured on, along with Daniel Caesar.
Days before it was released, Givēon revealed the tracklist, which has no features.
The decision to keep himself and his mother as the only voices heard on the album was not only intentional, but necessary. “This story is so personal that there can’t be another voice besides me and my mom because that’s the conversation that was had,” he said.
