A 21-year-old college student at SUNY Potsdam was fatally shot near campus on Friday.
WWNY reports Elizabeth Howell, 21, of Patterson, was shot shortly before 6 p.m. Friday. Police say Howell was found on College Park Road, in the village of Potsdam, located about 200 miles north of Albany.
Howell was pronounced dead after being rushed to Canton-Potsdam Hospital.
Alleged shooter Michael J. Snow, 31, was arrested on Saturday, and has been charged with second degree murder. Officials say Snow has no affiliation with the school, so it is unclear how he and Howell were connected.
The school took to Twitter on Saturday to remember Howell, a music education student at SUNY Potsdam Crane School of Music.
“We are in disbelief at the sudden loss of one of our own, Elizabeth Howell ‘22, a music education student at our Crane School of Music,” the school wrote. “Our thoughts are with all of Beth’s friends and family during this difficult time.”
The statement continued, “We have designated the Hosmer Gallery in the lobby of the Helen M. Hosmer Concert Hall at The Crane School of Music as a memorial space for members of the campus community. All will be welcome to leave flowers or items in Beth’s memory.”
