SZA Covers ’90s Classic “Kiss Me”

Written by on February 18, 2019

The ubiquitous 1998 hit “Kiss Me” is about to ensure the love of a whole new generation of fans thanks to SZA.

The Grammy and Oscar nominee debuted her take on the Sixpence None the Richer track during a headlining set the Ill Point Music Festival in Miami, Florida this weekend. Sadly, this performance wasn’t followed by the streaming release of a studio version of SZA’s cover.

“That song just makes me happy as fuck and I really wish it was ’98 right now,” SZA told the crowd.

The Sixpence track has previously been covered by Avril Lavigne and New Found Glory, among others. See more footage of SZA’s rendition below via various very fortunate witnesses:

SZA is up for the Academy Award for Best Original Song alongside Kendrick Lamar at this year’s Oscars. Their Black Panther collab “All the Stars” is in the running against songs from Lady Gaga, Dianne Warren, and more. The two are expected to perform at the ceremony this coming Sunday, though that’s still not been confirmed by the academy.

Earlier this month, SZA’s name was included in posts shared to Frank Ocean’s always fascinating Tumblr page indicating that new music was seemingly imminent. However, the posts were later determined to have been the work of a hacker.
