SZA wants kids.
In Complex’s new cover story, SZA—whose new album is indeed still on the horizon—revealed she wants to have children “really soon,” whether with a partner or on her own.
“I do wanna have kids. Like really soon,” she said. “But I don’t have a necessity for a family unit as much as I really would love kids. And it’s not even like I’m trying to do anything that’s groundbreaking or nontraditional or like, modern woman. I just literally feel like it’s less stressful to think about like, ‘Who’s it gonna be? Are they trustworthy? Is this person going to really love me? Is this partner material?’ Versus being like, OK, this is the doctor I know I want to deliver my kids.”
Ahead of this milestone, however, SZA said she’s been in a state of mind focused not only on getting her body right but also on continuing to better herself at a spiritual level.
“These are things that I can affect and like, I can’t even control them, but I can affect them in a way that allows me to be an active partner,” SZA said. “But it’s like the partner aspect… I really can’t control what God has for me in that area.”
Naturally, the aforementioned hot topic of new music was also broached during the interview. For now, SZA explained of the long-teased Ctrl follow-up, she is at a loss when it comes to finding the right words to describe what she’s been working on.
“I don’t even know what this album is about and what it sounds like. Which is why I had to go to the mode of what feels good to my brain and to my energy and the songs that I think are hot, I just have to go with them,” she said, adding that the album in its then-current form was “all over the place.”
Elsewhere, SZA teased that fans can expect a variety of sonic textures ranging from “aggressive” to “soft,” including some ballads.

In June, SZA marked the fifth anniversary of Ctrl with the release of a deluxe edition of the modern classic featuring added songs recorded between 2014 and 2017. The following month, TDE president Terrence “Punch” Henderson thanked listeners for their “continued patience and understanding” amid the wait for the follow-up.
