Taylor Swift Breaks Michael Jackson’s American Music Awards Record

Taylor Swift is now the artist with the most wins in American Music Awards history.
As Billboard points out, Swift’s five wins in nominated categories (and one special award) during the Los Angeles-set ceremony Sunday night brings her personal all-time total to 29 AMAs. The late Michael Jackson, meanwhile, had 24.
Swift’s 2020 victories included Artist of the Decade, Artist of the Year, Favorite Music Video, Favorite Female Artist – Pop/Rock, Favorite Album – Pop/Rock, and Favorite Artist – Adult Contemporary. Lil Nas X, Billie Eilish, Cardi B, and Camila Cabello were among the other winners of the night.

This year’s broadcast also featured a much-discussed medley performance from Swift. Older catalog entires like “I Knew You Were Trouble” and “Love Story” were performed amid newer cuts like the title track to her 2019 album Lover. However, the performance was preceded by public comments from Swift in which she accused Scooter Braun and Scott Borchetta of blocking her from performing songs from her Big Machine era on the show.
“I feel very strongly that sharing what is happening to me could change the awareness level for other artists and potentially help them avoid a similar fate,” Swift said earlier this month in a tweeted statement. “The message being sent to me is very clear. Basically, be a good little girl and shut up. Or you’ll be punished.”
Neither name got airtime on Sunday. While onstage at the ceremony, Swift thanked her longtime fans for the support and care over the years.
“The last year of my life has had some of the most amazing times and also some of the hardest things I’ve gone through in my life and not a lot of them are things that haven’t been public,” Swift said. “I wanted to thank you so much for being the thing that has been a constant in my life . . . The fans who have hung in there for 15 years of me doing this.”
Swift added that this particular year “has been a lot.”
