Taylor Swift Plans to Re-Record Her Masters

Written by on August 21, 2019

After exhausting all options, Taylor Swift says that she will hit the studio and re-record her masters.

Swift revealed her intentions during an interview with CBS Sunday Morning’s Tracy Smith that’s set to air on Aug. 25. “Oh yeah,” Swift responded when asked if she plans to re-record her music. “Yeah, absolutely.”

Singer Kelly Clarkson can be credited putting this innovative idea into the universe. When Swift’s bitter battle with Scooter Braun hit its peak, Clarkson suggested Swift re-record all her music and repackage it so that fans are inclined to purchase Swift’s versions over the originals.

“@taylorswift13 just a thought, U should go in & re-record all the songs that U don’t own the masters on exactly how U did them but put brand new art & some kind of incentive so fans will no longer buy the old versions,” Clarkson tweeted. “I’d buy all of the new versions just to prove a point.”

Scooter Braun’s Ithaca Holdings struck a $300 million deal with Scott Borchetta’s Big Machine Label Group to acquire the companies recordings. This included all the masters Swift up to her 2017 album Redemption. When the agreement was announced earlier this summer, Swift expressed her disappointment in a Tumblr post in which she called the move her “worst case scenario.”

She also claimed that this is an extension of the bullying she received in the past from Braun’s clients, Kanye West and Justin Bieber. Both Braun and Big Machine officials refuted Swift’s claims.

Swift’s first album since her Big Machine contract expired, Lover, will release the Friday before her CBS interview airs. According to the chairman of Republic Records, Monte Lipman, the album already has nearly sold a million in pre-sales.
