It’s been a long and bumpy ride for TBS’ Snowpiercer.
Since it was announced back in 2015, the post-apocalyptic series has experienced a number of delays, largely due to director, producer, and network shake-ups. But thankfully for fans, the wait is almost over.
During day two of San Diego Comic-Con, TBS released the first trailer for the highly anticipated TV show, which is expected to premiere in spring 2020. Snowpiercer is based on the French graphic novel Le Transperceneige and is considered a reboot of Bong Joon-ho’s 2013 film of the same name.
The TV adaptation will take place about seven years after an environmental catastrophe causes the planet to freeze over. Earth’s only survivors inhabit a perpetually moving train in which passengers are separated by class: The affluent—those who purchased tickets for the train—live near the front of the machine, while the poor—those who snuck onto the train—live in squalor at the tail end. The latter group is also subject to severe mistreatment from those higher on the totem pole, which eventually leads to a rebellion against the train’s engineer, Mr. Wilford.
The Snowpeircer TV series was developed by Josh Friedman and is executive produced by Joon-ho. The series stars Oscar winner Jennifer Connelly and Tony Award winner Daveed Diggs, who previously touched on the ways the show will differ from the movie.
“The politics that are hinted at in the film are explored in much more depth, and the mechanism of the train [is explored further],” he said during the 2017 Television Critics Association press tour, “just the little things that create a world, world specificity.”
Co-stars include Alison Wright, Mickey Sumner, Susan Park, Iddo Goldberg, Katie McGuinness, Lena Hall, Annalise Basso, Sam Otto, Roberto Urbina, Sheila Vand, and Jaylin Fletcher.
