Crenshaw’s own Terrace Martin has offered up his new thematic project Drones, and it’s stacked with features from a wide range of talent.

The star-studded release includes appearances from Kendrick Lamar, Snoop Dogg, Cordae, YG, Smino, Leon Bridges, Ty Dolla Sign, and James Fauntleroy, among a slew of others. The expansive project explores the Black American experience, which Terrace describes as “Black Disneyland.”

Engaged in deep talks with K-Dot, the two spoke on the growing lack of compassion embedded in society, a conversation that eventually led to the birth of the Drones’ title track. “Everybody always says the younger generation is so on the phone, but naw, everybody is addicted to the phone,” Martin said in an interview with Stereogum. “So [Kendrick Lamar] went in there, man, and he just started saying what being a drone means to him, and… the song ‘Drones’ itself is pretty much a statement that we are all one and we are all even robots as one.”

Terrace continued to have these sorts of philosophical conversations about the state of the world with every collaborator seen on this record, a process that helped the album fully encompass Black artistry. “There are touches of R&B, touches of jazz, touches of hip-hop, touches of classical, Cuban music, West African music, house music,” Martin explained in a press release statement. “You’re going to hear all elements of Black music within this record. It’s not one element I can leave out if I call myself a true Black artist.”
