Texans Leave Fans Stunned After Blowing 24-0 Lead to Chiefs

Written by on January 13, 2020

With less than 11 minutes remaining in the second quarter of the AFC divisional round against the Chiefs, the Texans jumped ahead to a 24-point lead in front of stunned and confused Arrowhead Stadium crowd.

After a first quarter of offensive futility, the Chiefs finally flipped the switch and outscored Houston 51-7 for the remainder of the game. In the second quarter where the Chiefs scored 28 unanswered points to take a four-point lead at halftime, quarterback Patrick Mahomes became the second player to throw four touchdowns in a single postseason period (Doug Williams did the same in Super Bowl XXII).

“Obviously, we didn’t want to be in that spot,” Mahomes said, per ESPN. “But the biggest thing I was preaching to the team was, let’s go do something special, let’s go do something special. Everybody’s already counting us out. Play by play we just chipped away at that lead and got to the half and came out the second half and kept firing.”

Mahomes’ teammate Travis Kelce caught three of those touchdown passes, becoming the first NFL player to do so in a single period of a postseason game.

The Texans’ epic collapse after leading by such a huge margin has left people on Twitter wondering how Houston could go from staging a 16-point comeback against the Buffalo Bills to getting embarrassed in similar fashion the following week.
