The Super Mario Bros. Movie has successfully fended off Evil Dead Rise to top the domestic box office for a third straight week, Variety reports.
The Universal Pictures film based on the legendary video game character brought in a hefty $58.23 million in its third weekend of release. Evil Dead Rise, the supernatural horror film from Warner Bros., opened with $23.5 million to take second place, while Guy Ritchie’s The Covenant came in third with $6.2 million.
In three weeks, The Super Mario Bros. Movie has grossed $434 million in North America and $871 million globally to make it the year’s biggest movie so far. Thanks to the massive week it just had, The Super Mario Bros. Movie has the highest third weekend ever for an animated film in the domestic market (beating the $46 million earned by Pixar/Disney’s The Incredibles 2 in 2018) and the seventh-biggest third weekend of all-time.
If Mario and his brother Luigi continue their fiery pace, Universal will have a $1 billion movie in their film catalog and will be the third highest-grossing Universal title of all time at the domestic box office, behind 2015’s Jurassic World ($653.4M) and 1982’s E.T. The Extraterrestrial ($437.1M).
Despite not offering up much of a challenge, Evil Dead Rise made some noise at the box office. On top of bringing in $23.5 million, the Warner Bros. picture added $16.8 million at the international box office, bringing its global tally to $40.3 million.
The Keanu Reeves-led John Wick: Chapter 4 added $5.75 million and Ben Affleck’s sports drama Air came right behind with $5.5 million to fill out the rest of the top five.
