The Toronto Raptors have fired head coach Nick Nurse, per Shams Charania.
In 2020, Nurse signed a four-year deal that would have kept him in Toronto through the 2023-24 season.
In a team statement, president Masai Ujiri thanked him for being “an integral part of this franchise’s most historic accomplishments” and that “a decision to make a change like this is never arrived at easily or taken lightly.”
The Raptors failed to make the postseason after losing their play-in game against the Chicago Bulls. They ended the season with a record of 41-41.
There were reports that the Raps were not happy with Nurse’s public comments where he openly questioned his future with the club. “Like you said, where my head’s at. And just see how the relationship with the organization is and everything. It’s been 10 years for me now, which is a pretty good run,” he told reporters.
The Raptors are expected to begin their search for a new coach. ESPN reports that the team will consider previous Boston Celtics coach Ime Udoka.
More details to come.
