Three Youth Soccer Players Taken to Hospital After Lightning Strikes Field

Written by on September 20, 2019

A soccer match in Jamaica was suspended in the 84th minute on Monday after a bolt of lightning struck the pitch, causing two players to almost simultaneously crumble to the ground with a third player collapsing shortly thereafter.

The Jamaican Observer reports that the match between Jamaica College and Wolmer’s Boys had been impacted by inclement weather since the first half.

Terrence Francis of Jamaica College was unresponsive when he was stretchered off the field and taken to a nearby hospital. Francis would later regain consciousness, but he was unable to talk and complained of pain on his left side. Dwayne Allen of Wolmer’s was the other player who was rushed to the hospital for medical attention.

Jamaica College head coach Davion Ferguson says another player on his club later complained of chest pains, and was taken to the hospital but eventually released.

Officials say the match will be scheduled for a later date in order for the clubs to finish the remaining six minutes of regulation.
