Just a month after Erik Cowie, the zookeeper who was prominently featured in the hit Netflix series Tiger King, passed away at the age of 53, officials with the New York City Office of Chief Medical Examiner have officially determined the cause of death.

TMZ reports the former head of Joe Exotic’s G.W. Zoo died naturally from acute and chronic alcohol use.

The news arrives just over a month after Cowie was found dead in a friend’s Brooklyn, New York City apartment. Cowie had been found face down by authorities, with a bottle of vodka by his side.

Cowie became known widely to the public after the release of the popular Netflix docuseries, in which he was featured.

Earlier this year, Cowie was arrested for a DUI in Oklahoma after he was involved in a car accident. He pled guilty and was about to be sentenced before skipping town. An arrest warrant was then issued.
