Trump Vents About ‘Parasite’ Winning Best Picture at the 2020 Oscars

Written by on February 21, 2020

February 9 was a beautiful day for cinema. It was on this night that Parasite became the first foreign-language film to win Best Picture at the Oscars. It was the night that the Academy dared to be progressive by giving a film from South Korea the ceremony’s top award.

Now, Donald Trump wants to throw all those good feelings away with his latest rant at a rally in Colorado Springs on Thursday.

“How bad were the Academy Awards this year?” Trump said at the rally. “And, the winner is… a movie from South Korea! What the hell was that all about? We got enough problems with South Korea with trade. On top of it, they give them best movie of the year? Was it good? I don’t know… Let’s get Gone With the Wind. Can we get like Gone With the Wind back, please? Sunset Boulevard, so many great movies.”

Parasite distributor Neon caught wind of the comments and clapped back on Twitter. “Understandable, he can’t read,” the account wrote.

The issue with Trump’s remarks is that, even though his opinion shouldn’t be taken seriously, especially since he admittedly has never seen Parasite, he sadly still holds a position of power and influence. His rant will be seen by many across the world, and the racist undertones in his criticism towards the Oscars and the crowd’s audible approval to his every word could come across as a sentiment that is shared by a huge swath of people in this country. Obviously, that isn’t the case, but what the President of the United States says, regardless of who holds the title, carries a lot of weight.

Trump briefly addressed Brad Pitt’s comment in his Oscars acceptance speech about the White House blocking former national security adviser John Bolton from testifying in his impeachment trial. “He got up and said little wiseguy statements,” Trump said, per Variety. “He’s a little wiseguy.” He also said he was “never a fan” of Pitt, but the feeling is probably mutual.
