Two of El Chapo’s Sons Indicted on Drug Conspiracy Charges

Written by on February 22, 2019

Two of Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman’s sons have been charged with drug trafficking in a single-count indictment which was unsealed in Washington last week, according to The Associated Press

Prosecutors allege Joaquin Guzman Lopez and Ovidio Guzman Lopez conspired to distribute cocaine, methamphetamine and marijuana from Mexico into the United States, and elsewhere in the world from 2008 to 2018. They remain fugitives, and are believed to still be residing in Mexico. Joaquin Guzman Lopez is 34 years old while Ovidio Guzman Lopez is 28.

El Chapo was recently convicted following a three-month trial, and will likely be placed in a Colorado-based high-security prison known as “Supermax” where he will likely spend the rest of his life behind bars.

El Chapo was extradited by the Mexican government to the United States in January 2017, and pled not guilty to 17 federal counts, which included engaging in a continuing criminal enterprise, conspiracy to launder narcotics proceeds, international distribution of cocaine, heroin, marijuana and other drugs, and use of firearms.

The first conviction alone carries a mandatory life in prison. Guzman cannot be given the death penalty as part of the conditions of his extradition. He will face his sentencing on June 25.
