It was five years ago when Tyler, the Creator gifted fans with Flower Boy, the critically acclaimed album that many consider a turning point in his career.
In celebration of the record’s anniversary, Tyler took to Twitter to recall some his favorite moments from the project, which is alternatively titled Scum Fuck Flower Boy. He listed specific instrumentals, lyrics, harmonies, as well as entire tracks, including “Droppin’ Seeds” with Lil Wayne, “Enjoy Right Now, Today,” and “November.”
Tyler also named “Sometimes” as one of his favorite cuts, despite it being only 36 seconds long. He went on to share a five-minute extended version of the track, and confirmed there was an even longer iteration floating around “somewhere.”
Tyler’s other favorite moments included the music at the beginning of “Pothole’s” second verse; the bridge on the Estelle-assisted “Garden Shed”; the second half of “I Ain’t Got Time!”; and the harmonies in “Glitter.”
Flower Boy consisted of 14 tracks with guest appearances by Frank Ocean, ASAP Rocky, Steve Lacy, Jaden Smith, Rex Orange County, and more. Critics praised the album for its production, which was entirely handled by Tyler, as well as its unique exploration of themes like depression, love, isolation, and self-discovery.
The album secured the No. 1 spot on Billboard’s US Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart, went platinum in the United States, and earned Tyler a Grammy nomination for Best Rap Album.
“Flower Boy’ changed everything for me,” Tyler tweeted Thursday, “thank you all for your ear.”
