USWNT Opens World Cup With 13-0 Win Over Thailand

Written by on June 11, 2019

While the US men’s soccer team has spent years tripping over their own feet, the US Women’s squad has been an indomitable force on the world stage for the better part of two decades. The USWNT flexed a bit of that strength today with an 13-0 clobbering of Thailand in the opening match of their World Cup run.

Alex Morgan and Rose Lavelle started the scoring, netting two goals in the 12th and 20th minute respectively. Lindsey Moran put in one more goal before halftime to make it 3-0. That alone would have been a strong win for the defending champs, but they came out of the locker room on an absolute tear. USWNT scored 10 goals in the second half including a 10-minute span that saw four goals from three players.

Alex Morgan walked away from the match with an eye-popping 5 goals. Rose Lavelle and Samantha Mewis each had multiple goals. It was an emphatic statement that the USWNT has no plans to cede their title as the best squad in the world.

The U.S. Women’s Team goes into the 2019 tournament in the midst of a discrimination lawsuit against U.S. Soccer seeking equal pay to the men’s team. And more than a few fans on Twitter were quick to point out that the squad is worth far more than they are being paid.

Others just watched in awe as the US decimated another team on the world stage.

Following the game, Fox Sports analyst Rob Stone called it “humiliating” and an “exercise in target practice for the United States.” He also said they should have “pull[ed] it back. Knock it around.”
