An Illinois shopping mall was placed on lockdown Friday afternoon after a black SUV plowed through a Sears entrance and proceeded to recklessly drive inside the building.
Video shows the Chevy Trailblazer smashing into kiosks and storefronts as customers run in fear. The incident reportedly occurred at around 2:45 p.m. at Woodfield Mall in the Chicago suburb of Schaumburg. The shopping center is one of the biggest and most popular in Illinois, housing 300 stores and restaurants.
According to the Chicago Tribune, the alleged driver of the vehicle has been taken into custody, but police have yet to confirm a motive. The 22-year-old suspect declined to be taken to the hospital and has not been formally charged. The Daily Herald reports the man was the only person in the SUV. He was initially detained by customers before police placed him in handcuffs.
Officials say four individuals were treated on the scene and three others were transported to the hospital with “non life-threatening medical issues.” Officers also said there were no shots fired during the incident, contrary to earlier reports.
“The FBI is aware of the situation at Woodfield Mall and is assisting at the request of local law enforcement,” read a statement from the Chicago office of the FBI. “There is no known threat to public safety at this time.”
