Vince Staples Speaks on Mac Miller’s Death: ‘The Good Ones Always Die’

Written by on November 8, 2018

The thought of Mac Miller’s untimely death never crossed Vince Staples‘ mind.

The FM! rapper spoke about the tragedy during a recent interview on Real 92.3’s Big Boy’s Neighborhood. Staples revealed he and Mac had many conversations about addiction struggles, but he at no time feared that death was imminent.

“He was trying. All you can ask for is for somebody to try,” an emotional Staples said. “You can’t always win, you know?”

Staples was then asked if he ever worried that Mac’s addiction would result in a fatal overdose. He replied, “never.”

“He was too happy. But to be honest, the good ones always die,” the Long Beach rapper said. “[…] I was never worried about him. I was worried about him, but never to that extreme.”

Big Boy then spoke about Mac’s happy demeanor—a trait that so many people have remembered him for.

“He was bright. As far as all them people, it’s all good; I appreciate what they say,” Staples said, “but I need them to say that to his momma and say that to his family, and check on them, because that’s what I care about. […] If you are somebody that cares about him, I would really suggest you reach out to his family, because they would appreciate it a lot.”

You can hear Staple’s comments in the video below.

The interview aired on Real 92.3 Wednesday, two months after Mac was found dead inside his southern California home. Earlier this week, the L.A. County Department of Medical Examiner-Coroner announced the Pittsburgh rapper had died of an accidental drug overdose.
