Warner Bros. and DC Developing Latino-Led ‘Blue Beetle’ Film

Written by on December 1, 2018

A Blue Beetle superhero movie is reportedly in the works.

According to The Wrap, Warner Bros. and DC are developing the project based on the Mexican-American comic book character Jaime Reyes. Though other Latino heroes have appeared in DC flicks—like Jay Hernandez as El Diablo in Suicide Squad and Rosie Perez as Renee Montoya in the upcoming Birds of Prey—Reyes will be the first Latino superhero to lead a standalone DCEU film.

At this time, we don’t have much information about the project including casting or possible directors; however, sources say Mexican-born writer Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer will pen the screenplay.

Reyes—created by Keith Giffen, John Rogers, and Cully Hamner—was introduced in 2006’s Infinite Crisis #5. He is a teenager from El Paso, Texas, who accidently finds the mystical Scarab. The Scarab eventually grafted itself to Reyes’ spine, giving him with supernatural powers and a suit of extraterrestrial armor.

Reyes is the third person to become the Blue Beetle since the superhero’s 1939 debut. He follows the characters of Dan Garret and Ted Kord.

Stay tuned as more information about the Blue Beetle movie becomes available.
