Watch Chance the Rapper Appear Alongside Elmo and Cookie Monster on ‘Sesame Street’

Written by on January 6, 2019

It’s already been a wild news year for Chance the Rapper, who’s made headlines for talking about his collaborations with R. Kelly and saving someone’s life. In less dramatic Chance content, he’s recently appeared on Sesame Street with Elmo and Cookie Monster.

On Saturday, Chance appeared on the kids show to teach that “T is for Theater.” He acts out a short play with Cookie Monster as Elmo directs. It’s about as silly and enjoyable as that description makes it sound, with Chance and the Cookie Monster playing off each other with constant interruptions from Elmo.

Over the weekend, Chance popped up in Surviving R. Kelly talking about why he worked with R. Kelly despite his awful reputation at the time. “We’re programed to really be hypersensitive to black male oppression—it’s just prevalent in all media,” he explained in a clip from Surviving R. Kelly. “And when you see n***as getting beat up by the police, it’s men. […] Slavery, for a lot of people, they envision men in chains; but black women are, you know, exponentially a higher oppressed and violated group of people, like, just in comparison to the whole world. Maybe I didn’t care because I didn’t value the accusers’ stories because they were black women.”

He clarified his comments, adding, “I apologize to all of his survivors for working with him and for taking this long to speak out.”
