Watch Colin Trevorrow’s New ‘Jurassic World’ Short Film

For the surprise new Jurassic World entry, director Colin Trevorrow took his crew to Ireland for a top secret shoot that he now jokes “shouldn’t have worked” at all.

The short, “Battle at Big Rock,” debuted on FX Sunday night and can now be enjoyed in full via the handy YouTube embed above. Trevorrow co-penned the script with his upcoming Jurassic World 3 writing partner Emily Carmichael (Pacific Rim: The Uprising). In an interview with Collider published over the weekend, the director—who previously helmed the first Jurassic World—detailed his decision to keep the production on the eight-minute short as minimal as possible.

“It was very carefully planned,” he said. “We did it in five days with a small crew. We had two child actors, a giant animatronic dinosaur and a baby. It shouldn’t have worked, but it did.”

Trevorrow said the project came together after Universal asked if he’d be interested in such a thing, a proposition he says he gave the studio approximately zero time to reconsider. For Trevorrow, who will next direct (and, as mentioned above, co-write) the third feature-length film in the Jurassic World saga, the short offered him a chance to take “a first step into a larger world” and is notably set place one year after the events of the 2018 sequel Fallen Kingdom.
