Netflix has dropped the first official trailer for the new comedy You People, which stars Jonah Hill, Eddie Murphy, Lauren London, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, and more.
From writers Jonah Hill and Kenya Barris, the film follows Ezra Cohen (Hill) and Amira Mohammed (London) who fall in love after connecting via a rideshare mix-up. As they plan to get married, their love and devotion to each other are tested by their respective families, who relentlessly try to insert themselves into their relationship.
Serving as Kenya Barris’ feature film debut, the comedy drops on Netflix on Jan. 27, and additionally stars Nia Long, David Duchovny, Mike Epps, Molly Gordon, Sam Jay, Andrew Schulz, Deon Cole, and Rhea Perlman.
“These collaborators are masters at their craft,” London said in a statement following the teaser trailer debut back in December. “You have Eddie Murphy and Julia and Nia Long and David Duchovny and Jonah Hill — and Kenya as the captain of the ship. Everyone brought in their specialness and their art.”
In a sprawling interview with Complex, Barris said he wanted to use the film to open up dialogues surrounding the “oppression Olympics” when it comes to Jewish and Black culture.
“We started talking about it in general, the Jewish and Black cultures often sometimes run into oppression Olympics and we loved the idea of that. I grew up in L.A., [Jonah Hill] grew up in L.A., and we’d have those conversations,” Barris tells Complex. “So there were a lot of things that we wanted to talk about that we felt like would be interesting and hadn’t really been explored or would make it feel like it was of the time. We didn’t know how much of the time it would be at that moment, but we definitely wanted to talk about things that were in our heart.”
