Warner Brothers shared the first look at The Sun Is Also a Star, the rapid-fire romance starring Riverdale‘s Charles Melton and Black-ish‘s Yara Shahidi.
The movie, based around a novel of the same name by Nicola Yoon, follows a Jamaican woman fighting off her family’s deportation and a college-bound freshman who meet on the former’s supposed last day in the United States. Sparks fly between Natasha Kingsley and Daniel Bae even as Natasha considers the possibility that she’ll be forced to leave New York.
Melton’s Bae lays out a challenge and the central premise of the story in the new trailer. “What if I told you I could get you to fall in love with me?” he asks. “Just give me a day.”
Shahidi explained the importance of the dueling narratives in an interview with People. The actress noted that the grounding of the soft, romantic side of the story in the hard reality of the immigrant experience was crucial to the film.
“It’s what we’re witnessing right now,” Shahidi said. “We’ve also witnessed on a regular basis that there has never been a moment in which people of immigrant families have had the peace of mind that where they’re going they’re able to call home. And because of that, it was really important that this storyline was made so serious and taken as seriously as the love story itself. It is not peripheral to the storyline.”
The film was directed by Ry Russo-Young from a screenplay by Girls Trip‘s Tracy Oliver. It’s due out on May 17. Take a look at the trailer up top.
