Watch Tyler, the Creator’s Grammys Acceptance Speech for Best Rap Album

Written by on January 27, 2020

Tyler, the Creator received the Best Rap Album for IGOR award at the 2020 Grammys, marking his first win of the evening and his first win ever.

“Alright, I don’t know if I’m ever gonna be up here again, so bear with me,” Tyler said during his acceptance speech, alongside his mother, who was visibly crying. “That’s my mom if y’all are wondering. You did a great job raising this guy.”

The 28-year-old artist went on to thank his friends, family, management, and everyone who supported and trusted his “crazy ideas.” He then touched on his place within hip-hop, admitting he never fully felt accepted in rap. But he said there was one special artist who inspired him to be himself.

“I don’t know if he’s here, but I really wanna thank Pharrell Williams,” he said, “because, again, growing up, feeling left and center to a lot of stuff that I saw on TV, that man has allowed me to be comfortable with myself, and has opened up doors that you guys cannot imagine … so thank you, P.”

Among those who acknowledged Tyler’s win was Jaden Smith, who used the opportunity to reignite the whole “boyfriends” joke.

Check out Tyler’s full speech below.

Following the win, Tyler spoke to reporters backstage about winning within a rap category, calling it a “backhanded compliment.”
