White House Adviser Calls COVID-19 Protesters the ‘Modern-Day Rosa Parks’

Written by on April 18, 2020

If there’s something that’s not equivalent to the horrors of the Jim Crow South and segregation, it would be social distancing. White House adviser Stephen Moore, however, would seemingly argue against that point as he described COVID-19 protestors as the “modern-day Rosa Parks.”

“I call these people modern-day Rosa Parks,” Moore told The Washington Post. “They are protesting against injustice and a loss of liberties.”

Some may think this remark was a horribly out-of-touch comment that was a one-off mishap, but they would be wrong. Moore used this comparison on several occasions when discussing the subject.

“It’s interesting to me that the right has become more the Rosa Parks of the world than the left is,” Moore said to CBS News. He was also quoted by The New York Times as saying: “We need to be the Rosa Parks here, and protest against these government injustices.”

Moore is a member of President Trump‘s back-to-work council and is involved with a coalition of conservative leaders called “Save Our Country.” This group is working to combat business shutdowns and stay-at-home orders during the coronavirus outbreak. This places him on the side of protesters who gathered in places like Michigan to “liberate” their state from social distancing orders.

As imagined, comparing these groups of majority-white protesters to one of the catalysts of the Civil Rights Movement didn’t sit well with Americans.
