Racial profiling impacts far too many on a daily basis, but people don’t usually expect to be denied entry to their home by a complete stranger. As the New York Times reports, a white woman from St. Louis named Hilary Brooke Mueller did just that when she physically blocked D’Arreion Toles as he attempted to enter the luxury apartment building in which he lives.
When Toles came home from work, he was greeted by an unidentified woman who refused to let him get to his apartment complex, saying that she didn’t believe that he lived there. Tribeca Luxury Apartments, the woman’s employer, say they were “disturbed” to hear about the incident and that she has since been fired from her job.
Toles recorded the woman on his phone and posted the incident on Facebook. The woman demanded proof that he lived there and he had to push past her to get into his unit. Toles said that police eventually arrived but didn’t give out any citations.
“I was kind of blown away, shocked and like wow,” Toles explained, per CBS News. “I am just glad I had my camera out. If I did not have my camera out, I feel it could have gone a totally different way.” Toles says he won’t be pursuing legal action. “I am not mad at her. I am not upset with her. I am not going to go after her legally or anything like that. I wish her the best.”
