The viral footage was met with outrage across the country, and ignited calls for increased protections for those who are contracted by food delivery apps, such as\u00a0Uber Eats, DoorDash, and Grubhub.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>To\u00f1o Sol\u00eds, a member of the delivery worker labor group Los Deliveristas Unidos, told <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thecity.nyc\/2021\/9\/2\/22655142\/nyc-food-delivery-workers-deliveristas-cheap-tips-ida-storm\" rel=\"noopener\">The City<\/a> he was among the couriers who worked during Hurricane Ida. He claimed he had worked more than nine hours during the downpour and had received only $5 on an hour-long delivery. Solis told the outlet he earned an average of $12 per hour, plus tips, on that work day. (New York\u2019s current minimum wage is $15 an hour.)<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a cruel joke,\u201d Sol\u00eds said about his pay. \u201cThis is exactly why we protest and we organize \u2014 we need fair wages. These companies are getting richer and richer and we\u2019re only earning $5 in these conditions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Los Deliveristas Unidos are widely credited for helping push the new measures, which include setting a minimum pay for each delivery trip (independent of full tips), permitting\u00a0couriers to set maximum trip distances,\u00a0forcing\u00a0restaurants to allow contractors to use their restrooms, and requiring\u00a0apps to pay the delivery workers at least once a week.
