Smith ended up winning the Best Actor category later that night, and revealed what Washington had told him after the incident.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDenzel said to me a few minutes ago, \u2018At your highest moment, be careful. That\u2019s when the devil comes for you,\u2019\u201d Smith told the audience during his acceptance speech.<\/p>\n<p>Washington was asked about the moment while\u00a0attending\u00a0bishop T.D. Jakes\u2019 leadership summit on Saturday, and attempted to shed more light on his \u201cdevil\u201d comments.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWell, there\u2019s a saying, \u2018When the devil ignores you, then you know you\u2019re doing something wrong,\u2019\u201d he said, as reported <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2022\/film\/news\/denzel-washington-will-smith-slap-oscars-1235221754\/\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Variety<\/em><\/a>. \u201cThe devil goes, \u2018Oh no, leave him alone, he\u2019s my favorite.\u2019 Conversely, when the devil comes at you, maybe it\u2019s because he\u2019s trying to do something right. And for whatever reason the devil got ahold of that circumstance that night.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Washington, who has two Oscars under his belt, remained relatively tight-lipped about what he told Smith, but confirmed he had joined the actor in prayer during the ceremony.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFortunately there were people there. Not just me, but others,\u201d he continued. \u201cTyler Perry came immediately right over there with me. [Said] some prayers. I don\u2019t wanna say what we talked about, but for the grace of God go any of us. Who are we to condemn? I don\u2019t know all the ins and outs of the situation, but I know the only solution was prayer, the way I see it.\u201d<\/p>\n<section class=\"suitcase-ad\" \/>\n<p>Shortly after Smith issued a public apology to Rock, he <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.complex.com\/pop-culture\/will-smith-resigns-from-academy-chris-rock-slap\" rel=\"noopener\">announced his resignation<\/a> from the\u00a0Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe list of those I have hurt is long and includes Chris, his family, many of my dear friends and loved ones, all those in attendance, and global audiences at home,\u201d Smith said in a statement. \u201cI betrayed the trust of the Academy. I deprived other nominees and winners of their opportunity to celebrate and be celebrated for their extraordinary work.
